ZooToxins L.L.C. will soon be licensed by the State of California for the commercial sale of venom from native rattlesnakes for research purposes. Venom samples are available pooled by geographical region, from individual snakes, and from a range of locations within California.

Fangs and Shed Skins

To produce our vaccine, ZooToxins L.L.C. maintains a large colony of captive rattlesnakes. These rattlesnakes are maintained until they die of natural causes and along the way, they produce shed skins and shed fangs as natural byproducts of digestion and growth. Shed skins are removed from the cages as soon as they are available and allowed to dry. We are able to collect shed skins from baby to adult snakes. Rattlesnakes routinely replace the two large fangs they use to deliver venom and shed them by swallowing and then defecating them out (see picture below). We collect fangs when available and clean them to ensure that any residual venom is neutralized before sale. We would like to repeat that both shed skin and fangs are collected as the result of natural processes these snakes undergo throughout their lives.
